The Drovers Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson release date confirmed.

Leah Purcell’s feature debut will be released across Australian cinemas on October 14.

Henry Lawson’s short story re-imagined, The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson tells the story of a woman and her stubborn determination to protect her family from the harshness of a life in 1893, Snowy Mountains.

Following its world premiere at the innovative SXSW (South By South West) Film Festival in March, Screen Daily said the stark revisionist Western is “an impassioned film with an unflinching Indigenous and feminist perspective”.

Leah wrote, directed and starred in the film alongside Rob Collins, Sam Reid, Jessica de Gouw, Malachi Dower-Roberts, Tony Cogin, and Harry Greenwood.

Filmed on location in Australia’s dramatic high country, The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson is the feature adaptation of Leah Purcell’s hugely successful stage play.

The film’s international sales will be handled by Memento Films International.  Roadshow Films will handle the ANZ Distribution.

The trailer will be released in the coming months.

Production creditThe Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson is a Oombarra and Bunya Productions production. Major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Screen NSW.
